A Simple Linear-Time Approximation Algorithm for Multi-processor Job Scheduling on Four Processors

چکیده
Multiprocessor job scheduling problem has become increasingly interesting, for both theoretical study and practical applications. Theoretical study of the problem has made significant progress recently, which, however, seems not to imply practical algorithms for the problem, yet. Practical algorithms have been developed only for systems with three processors and the techniques seem difficult to extend to systems with more than three processors. This paper offers new observations and introduces new techniques for the multiprocessor job scheduling problem on systems with four processors. A very simple and practical linear time approximation algorithm of ratio bounded by 1.5 is developed for the multi-processor job scheduling problem P4|fix|Cmax, which significantly improves previous results. Our techniques are also useful for multiprocessor job scheduling problems on systems with more than four processors.

Scheduling Jobs with Communication Delays: Using Infeasible Solutions for Approximation
In the last few years, multi-processor scheduling with interprocessor communication delays has received increasing attention. This is due to the more realistic constraints in modeling parallel processor systems. Most research in this vein is concerned with the makespan criterion. We contribute to this work by presenting a new and simple ( 2 1)-approximation algorithm for scheduling to minimize ...
متن کاملAn Efficient Bi-objective Genetic Algorithm for the Single Batch-Processing Machine Scheduling Problem with Sequence Dependent Family Setup Time and Non-identical Job Sizes
This paper considers the problem of minimizing make-span and maximum tardiness simultaneously for scheduling jobs under non-identical job sizes, dynamic job arrivals, incompatible job families, and sequence-dependentfamily setup time on the single batch- processor, where split size of jobs is allowed between batches. At first, a new Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is proposed for t...
متن کاملJoint Cache Partition and Job Assignment on Multi-core Processors
Multicore shared cache processors pose a challenge for designers of embedded systems who try to achieve minimal and predictable execution time of workloads consisting of several jobs. To address this challenge the cache is statically partitioned among the cores and the jobs are assigned to the cores so as to minimize the makespan. Several heuristic algorithms have been proposed that jointly dec...
متن کاملA Simulated Annealing Algorithm for Multi Objective Flexible Job Shop Scheduling with Overlapping in Operations
In this paper, we considered solving approaches to flexible job shop problems. Makespan is not a good evaluation criterion with overlapping in operations assumption. Accordingly, in addition to makespan, we used total machine work loading time and critical machine work loading time as evaluation criteria. As overlapping in operations is a practical assumption in chemical, petrochemical, and gla...
متن کاملLinear Algorithms for Preemptive Scheduling of Multiprocessor Tasks Subject to Minimal Lateness
In scheduling theory it is widely assumed that a task is to be processed on one processor at a time. This assumption is not so obvious in the context of recently emerging parallel computer systems and parallel algorithms. In this work we consider tasks requiring more than one dedicated processor at a time, i.e. sets of processors simultaneously. Linear time algorithms will be given for the case...
